service sector definition - business

service sector

The part of the economy that includes individuals and businesses that produce services rather than goods. The service sector includes education, finance, communications, health care, utilities, wholesale and retail trade, and transportation. In the mid-1980s employment in the United States was evenly divided between service jobs and production jobs. The split has since changed, such that the service sector provides a significant majority of jobs in the United States.
