service department
The section of a manufacturing or retail business that provides assistance to the firm's customers. The service department of a manufacturer takes care of exchanging or repairing faulty products, responds to questions, and may follow up sales with a customer satisfaction survey. The service department of a retailer offers credit applications, accepts payments, places merchandise on layaway, and takes care of returns.
