  1. Selecting and examining a subset of a population in order to reach certain conclusions about the characteristics of the population: The manufacturer found that extensive sampling of its products allowed it to pinpoint quality problems and improve its manufacturing process.
  2. Offering small or inexpensive samples of a product in an effort to encourage subsequent purchases. Manufacturers frequently use sampling during the introduction of a new product.
