  1. A subset chosen from a population. For example, a marketing researcher interviews a sample of visitors to the shopping mall in an effort to determine the types of mall advertising that have been most effective. A sample should be representative of the population from which it is drawn.
  2. A product given without charge to a potential customer by a manufacturer, distributor, or retailer.
