reversing entry

reversing entry definition - business

reversing entry

An accounting journal entry that exactly offsets a previous entry. For example, a business issues bonds on October 1 with the first semiannual interest payment due on April 1 of the following year. Interest expense is debited and interest payable is credited at the end of the first year. A reversing entry the following year credits interest expense and debits interest payable.
