position

  1. The ownership status of a person's or an institution's investments. For example, a person may own 500 shares of Google, 350 shares of Boeing, and a $10,000 principal amount of 7% bonds due in 2020. See also long position, short position.
  2. The financial condition of a firm, especially with regard to debt.
  3. The status of a business or product relative to its competitors. For example, Toyota enjoyed growing sales, a nonunion labor force, and a reputation for quality that gave the company a commanding position in the automotive industry.
  4. The net balance in a foreign currency.
