Maslow's hierarchy of needs

Psychologist Abraham Maslow's (1908-70) theory of the factors that motivate and sustain human behavior. Maslow theorized that individuals have various layers of needs, beginning with the physiological needs for air, water, and food, and ending with self-actualization and transcendence that result in self-fulfillment. Each layer of needs must be successively satisfied before moving to the next higher level.
