Forced resignation from employment at a specific age. In the 1970s, nearly 40% of male employees in the United States were subject to mandatory retirement at age 65. Mandatory retirement ended for most employees in 1978 and 1986 with passage of the federal Age Discrimination in Employment Act. Also called compulsory retirement.
