mandate

  1. An official order to do something. For example, a corporate executive may issue a mandate that committee members be on time.
  2. An instruction from a court or a court official.
  3. Authorization to do something. For example, a candidate who promised to reduce property taxes during the election campaign assumes a mandate to do so if elected.
