institutional ownership definition - business

institutional ownership

The ownership of a company's stock by mutual funds, pension funds, and other institutional investors, generally expressed as a percentage of outstanding shares. A high proportion of institutional ownership may result in relatively large changes in a stock's price, as institutions tend to buy and sell the same stocks at the same time.
