generic mark definition - business

generic mark

A word or symbol that identifies a class of products or services rather than the product or service of a particular provider. For example, “corn flakes," while once a trademarked product, now identifies a particular type of cereal, but not that of a particular manufacturer. Generic marks are not subject to trademark protection.
