Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) definition - business

Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA)

A trademark for one of the oldest and most widely quoted measures of stock market price movements. The average is calculated by adding the share prices of 30 large, seasoned firms, such as Intel, ExxonMobil, General Electric, and GM, and dividing the sum by a figure that is adjusted for such things as stock splits and substitutions. Dow Jones also publishes other averages, including one for transportation and one for utilities. Also called [the] Dow.
