defense of property

A claim by a defendant that he or she should not be held liable because the action was taken in defense of the defendant's premises or personal property. For example, a homeowner who has suffered several robberies sets a trap inside the home that injures someone who has entered the home illegally. The homeowner is sued and claims defense of property.
