civil recovery definition - business

civil recovery

Legal means by which a business may attempt to reclaim losses and costs directly from a wrongdoer without the expense of using the court system. For example, a merchant may utilize civil recovery in relation to a person who is caught with unpaid merchandise. The person accused of theft may make restitution or choose to have the matter tried in civil court. See also merchant's privilege.
