  1. To force an option writer to sell shares of stock at a price stipulated in a contract. Stocks usually are called just before the expiration of the options.
  2. To redeem bonds prior to the scheduled maturity.
  3. To redeem shares of preferred stock.
  4. To demand repayment of a bank loan.
