bill of lading
A written receipt provided by a carrier to a shipper of goods. The document acknowledges receipt of the goods described along with the provisions of transport. A bill of lading noting a deficiency, such as damaged merchandise, is described as claused. A bill of lading without a deficiency is clean. See also order bill of lading, straight bill of lading.
