bar code

A series of vertical bars of varying thickness and separation that provides information about the object to which it is attached. A bar code is read with a laser beam that is sensitive to reflected light that is converted into digital data. Bar codes are useful in improving the efficiency of sorting, inventory control, and checkout. See also Radio Frequency Identification, universal product code.
