advance

  1. Money provided by an employer to an employee before the money is earned. For example, a new employee may seek an advance to pay for moving expenses and necessities. Also called cash advance.
  2. Prepayment for a good or service. Authors often get an advance against royalties from publishers.
  3. An increase in the price of a security.
