The purchase of an asset such as a plant, division, or even an entire company. For example, Sacramento, CA-based McClatchy Company made a major acquisition in 2006 when the firm purchased the Knight Ridder newspaper chain for cash and stock worth nearly $6.5 billion. McClatchy, which wanted to extend its reach in the newspaper industry, later sold some of the Knight Ridder papers.
