The definition of a bait and switch is a generally illegal advertising practice where you are promised one item at a low price, but latter are urged to buy a more expensive item because something is wrong with the first item or it is no longer available.

  1. An example of a bait and switch is when your mother promises you cookies but gives you spinach.
  2. An example of a bait and switch is when a car dealer promises a car for $2000 but then you get to the dealership and are told you don't qualify for that deal but can instead get a $5000 car.
