ASIC

A semiconductor integrated circuit designed for a specific application. An ASIC, for example, can be designed specifically a real-time processing task such as running a particular type of encryption, or running a cell phone or personal digital assistant (PDA). Contemporary ASICs often contain complete processors, and RAM, ROM, Flash, and other types of memory. See also encryption, flash, memory, RAM, ROM, and semiconductor.
