American
Depository Receipts, sometimes called American Depository Shares. These
represent shares of a foreign company that can be purchased in the U.S., with
transactions settled and dividends paid in dollars. When an investor purchases
ADR shares, the bank makes a deposit abroad to buy the actual shares of the
foreign stock. Companies issuing ADRs have to follow U.S. regulatory and
accounting rules.
