adr - Investment & Finance Definition
American Depository Receipts, sometimes called American Depository Shares. These represent shares of a foreign company that can be purchased in the U.S., with transactions settled and dividends paid in dollars. When an investor purchases ADR shares, the bank makes a deposit abroad to buy the actual shares of the foreign stock. Companies issuing ADRs have to follow U.S. regulatory and accounting rules.
