FAQ: Technical Answers

1. Why does my Word of the Day look like gibberish?
Either your e-mail application or your internet service provider does not support HTML, the code in which web pages are written for the computer. If you subscribed to receive the HTML (Web page) version, you need to change the format or your Word of the Day from HTML to Plain Text by following these simple directions.

The solution:

  • Go to the Registration page
  • In the first box, type your e-mail address completely in lower case characters even if your address usually contains capital letters. For example, Nobody@yourDictionary.com would type nobody@yourdictionary.com
  • Click on the "Change" button. This will take you to a page containing your subscription "profile," i.e. information needed to deliver your Word of the Day in the format you wish.
NOTE: To change your profile you only type in your e-mail address and you must click on the "Change" button. Do not choose your options from those on the registration page; that is for new subscribers only.
  • On your profile page, look at the second question, "Please send my Word of the Day as," and click on the button next to "Plain Text"
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on "Change."

And that's that!

2. How do I unsubscribe from Word of the Day?
It's easy (for you, not for us-we'll miss you).

  • Look at the first question, "Word of the Day," and click on the button next to "Unsubscribe."
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Change

And that's that.

3. Why do I receive only the Word of the Day itself, not the entire message?
Either your e-mail application or your internet service provider does not support HTML, the code in which web pages are written for the computer. And that's that!

4. Why doesn't the Word of the day contain an audio file with pronunciation?
We are working on it!

5. Do you offer a Word of the Day in language X?
We are aware of a wide interest in a Word of the Day in languages other than English. We will be responding to this interest. The first language to be added will be Spanish and we hope to have it available by the fall of 2001.

6. How do I suggest a Word of the Day?
First, go to the Archive at http://www.yourdictionary.com/wotd-archive/word-index.html and, using your browser's search function (control+F), check to see if the word you have in mind has been used previously. Then send an e-mail and tell us what you'd like to see.

7. I saw this word-which language does it come from?
First, try our Language Identifiers. If that fails it is unlikely that anyone on our staff will be able to identify your word without some supportive evidence.

8. Something is wrong with an entry or a word is missing from dictionary X.
