The theorem of Torricelli was employed by many succeeding writers, but particularly by Edme Mariotte (1620-1684), whose Traite du mouvement des eaux, published after his death in the year 1686, is founded on a great variety of well-conducted experiments on the motion of fluids, performed at Versailles and Chantilly.
Skirting the forests of Compiegne, Halatte and Chantilly, all on its left bank, and receiving near Creil the Therain and the Breche, the river flows past Pontoise and debouches into the Seine 39 m.
On this account he was not received with favour by Louis XIV.; so in 1683 he assisted the Imperialists in Hungary, and while there he wrote some letters in which he referred to Louis as le roi du theatre, for which on his return to France he was temporarily banished to Chantilly.
He died at St Firmin, near Chantilly, on the 13th of February 1806.
He retired from public life in 1792, and died at Chantilly, in Westmoreland county, on the 19th of June 1794.
